Warum kostet ein Freiwilligendienst Geld?

Vielleicht fragen Sie sich, warum die Vermittlung in unsere Freiwilligendienste etwas kostet?

Hier sind ein paar Gründe!

• Sie arbeiten im Gastland nicht, sondern verrichten einen Freiwilligendienst, ähnlich wie Sie sich hier in der Schweiz in einer Pfarrei oder in einem Altenheim engagieren würden.
• Wenn Sie im Gastland arbeiten würden, nähmen Sie den Menschen dort die Arbeit weg. Denn Sie sind kein Spezialist, und Ihre Arbeit im Gastland kann normalerweise von jemand anderem verrichtet werden. Dass Sie als Ausländer kommen und diesen Dienst verrichten, freut die Gastländer und hilft dem Land genauso wie Ihnen dabei, sich der Welt zu öffnen. Unentbehrlich wie ein Notfallmediziner sind Sie aber nicht.
• Um einen solchen Aufenthalt zu organisieren, müssen viele Menschen auf mindestens 2 Kontinenten daran arbeiten. Kosten für Personal, Büro, Infrastruktur, Kommunikation, Pflege der Webseite etc. müssen bezahlt werden.
• Im Gastland müssen die örtlichen Betreuer, Gastfamilien und Ihr Koordinator bezahlt werden. Dazu kommen Unterkunft und Verpflegung, Transporte, Einweisung, Orientierung usw.
• Die VIP-Programme vom Experiment werden nicht staatlich gefördert (wie z.B. beim Europäischen Freiwilligendienst) sondern von den Teilnehmern, d.h. von Ihnen getragen.
• Schliesslich müssen diese Programme auch noch konzipiert und im Gastland realisiert werden. Das Experiment in International Living ist eine über 80-jährige etablierte gemeinnützige Institution, die bei der Konzeption dieser Programme besonders sorgfältig ist. Wir arbeiten nach den Prinzipien der Gemeinnützigkeit, d.h. haben keinen kommerziellen Anspruch wie ein Reisebüro. Und doch: Das alles bedeutet menschliche Arbeitszeit, und viele Köpfe sind involviert.
• Die Programmpreise beinhalten meist auch noch einen Sprachkurs, der auch wieder von jemandem organisiert und gehalten werden muss.
• Wenn Sie den Preis für ein Programm durch die Anzahl der Monate teilen, die man im Ausland verbringt, werden Sie sehen, dass der Betrag ungleich niedriger ist als das, was die Lebenshaltungskosten in der Schweiz für den gleichen Zeitraum kosten.

Prospective volunteers are often surprised to find that volunteering can be an expensive undertaking and that most international volunteer programs, including VIP, charge a fee for participation.

Many costs are incurred even before your departure. These typically include pre-departure workshops and orientation, selection and screening of projects and accommodations, arranging for meals and local transportation, as well as ongoing program monitoring and 24/7 emergency support. To provide a consistently high quality program, it is necessary to employ staff, maintain a proper infrastructure and cover administrative costs including program development, rent, computers, insurance and communications.

VIP is operated by "not for profit" organizations in both your home country and in your host country. This means that no individual or group owns the organization. There are no shareholders or annual dividends or profits to be paid to anyone. Programs are fully funded by participant fees and host project organizations are never asked to contribute to or absorb the direct costs associated with receiving a volunteer.

VIP strives to provide a supportive environment that will permit you to gain valuable experience while doing good work and making a difference in some of the most deprived communities in the world. This means assisting you with your preparations for the program and then providing the local knowledge, expertise and ongoing support that is needed once you are in your host community.
